Dead Scientists – Woodpecker

Dead Scientists explain the story behind their song “Woodpecker“.

“This song is feels like one of our most important moments. Back in 2009, we’d just moved to this ludicrously expensive flat in Manchester’s canal district. We’d both just finished university and we were broke and trying to make a start of our lives. It was a very bleak and gloomy time – the credit crunch recession had started biting and it felt like our options were very much limited.
We started working on music together and one of the earliest song ideas was going to be called Woodpecker. It was inspired by the ‘Duga’ Radar near Chernobyl, given its name due to the sounds that it emitted. Dan had written this odd, glitchy mellotron melody that then blended with Ross’s guitar and glitched 808 beats. When that started to come together there was a palpable excitement about what our band might become and the ideas that would form into songs. It was that first moment of pure optimism that many musicians get with a new project or idea – and that is indescribable.
We didn’t get to finish Woodpecker until we reformed in 2019 and we were both worried it wouldn’t live up to our own internal hype. But the finished song completely surpassed our expectations and with the recently made conceptual music video to accompany it – we are both so proud of this song.”
